Ngā Marae

About this site

Kia ora, my name is Zane Egginton, and this webpage, Ngā Marae, is a prototype developed as part of my Master of Design research at the University of Auckland, supported by a scholarship from QuakeCoRE. This research complements the forthcoming atlas for Ngāti Awa, He Puka Mahere Hai Tauakitanga Marae o Ngāti Awa: Atlas of Marae Resilience (not published at time of writing). The project has been shaped with the guidance of Professor Anthony Hoete (Ngāti Awa) and my supervisor, Dr. Mairi Gunn, whose combined expertise in cultural, design, and resilience frameworks has been instrumental in its development.

My background in science (a BSc from the University of Waikato) and professional experience spans multiple disciplines, providing a strong foundation for this research. Previously, I was a lecturer in the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture programme at Unitec, where I taught design technology, including CAD, GIS, and digital visualisation, as well as earth processes and mitigation techniques, bridging natural systems and innovative design solutions. More recently, my focus has been on leading digital innovation in various projects at the University of Auckland, honing my ability to integrate advanced technologies into meaningful cultural and environmental contexts.

The Ngā Marae website exemplifies how digital platforms can combine geospatial tools, design thinking, and mātauranga māori to present marae-related information in culturally resonant and practical ways. Reflecting the principles of mana motuhake (self-determination) and Māori Data Sovereignty, this project ensures that data is governed and used by Māori to benefit their communities. Its aims include supporting hazard resilience, informed decision-making, natural hazard education, and sustainable planning, while prioritising cultural integrity.

This prototype highlights the potential of digital design to support communities in preparing for future challenges, with a focus on natural hazard resilience. Further development would involve deeper collaboration with Māori communities to refine and expand the platform, ensuring it aligns with their aspirations and cultural values. By integrating mātauranga Māori, science, design, and digital innovation, and upholding tikanga, this research seeks to enhance resilience for Māori and future generations.
