Earthquake Safety for Tamariki Posted on May 1, 2024January 8, 2025 By Zane Egginton Heres a couple of videos to help your Tamariki learn about Earthquakes. Turtle Safe Turtle Safe helps teach young kids what to do in an earthquake. Use Turtle Safe in your early childcare centre and practice Drop, Cover and Hold. Drop. So you don’t get knocked off your feet. Cover, your head and neck. And get under a table if you can. Hold, until the shaking stops. New Zealand has thousands of earthquakes every year. Most are not felt and do not cause damage or injury. But a severe earthquake can happen at any time. Aftershocks can continue for weeks or months. Most injuries from earthquakes are caused by falling debris. Knowing what to do and acting quickly can stop you being injured and save lives. Talk to children about earthquakes so they are less afraid and anxious when one happens. Encourage them to ask questions and give them opportunities to express their feelings. Remind them that it can be a frightening experience for everyone. By that it will get better and there will be people around to help.
