RHM Map – Ngāti Awa Rohe

Posted on September 14, 2024January 8, 2025 By Zane Egginton

This is a Test of an embedded map.

This relative height map shows the ground height relative to the nearest river. This helps identify areas that may be prone to flooding, either by the elevation or due to its physical structure. Some areas may be well above the river level however the landform may form a bowl like structure, capturing water and resticting it’s flow.
The map was created by plotting the centre line of majour waterways then heights were extracted from Lidar data at 100m intervals along these river centre lines. This data was used to map the heights of the nearest river across the Ngāti Awa Rohe using an inverse distance weighted (IDW) technique. This was then subtracted from LiDAR data at a 1m resolution efectivly leveling out the profile of the river and the surrounding land. This makes it much easier to visulaise river structures and reveals stories of the landscape.
